Oscar Piastri finished Friday's running ahead of the Japanese Grand Prix with the fastest time, the McLaren driver posting a 1m 30.133s in Free Practice 2.
The Australian, who has yet to start a Grand Prix this season after issues in Australia and China, led the way at the Suzuka Circuit during the second one-hour session of practice.
Using Pirelli's soft tyre, Piastri finished nearly one-tenth clear of Formula 1's newest race winner, Kimi Antonelli, the Mercedes driver in turn one-tenth faster than team mate, George Russell.
