F1 The Movie has officially been released in cinemas, with the film's international release date of June 25 arriving after huge anticipation.
Directed by Joseph Kosinski and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, Hollywood star Brad Pitt plays Sonny Hayes, a former F1 driver who makes his comeback at the fictional APXGP team to partner rookie team mate Joshua Pearce (played by Damson Idris).
Filming saw the fictional team slot in alongside the existing 10 outfits up and down the pit lane, with much of the action captured on real Grand Prix weekends throughout the 2023 and 2024 F1 seasons.
Now, after plenty of hard work on and off the track, the finished product is ready to be viewed by F1 fans and newcomers in cinemas across the globe. A North American release date follows shortly after on June 27.
“The teams and the drivers, everyone opened their doors for us and [they] are a big part of this movie,” Pitt explained on the red carpet of the film's New York premiere earlier this month.
“[They] let us in in a way that I would never have expected. [It was] just an experience I will never forget.”
Pitt also reflected on the challenge of creating F1 The Movie's plotline in order to strike a balance for both new and existing fans of the sport.
“The hardest thing was to develop a story,” the actor said. “The sport is so revered and there’s so many people that are quite knowledgeable about it, and then there’s so many people who haven’t seen it yet.
“And to try to thread this needle where we’re not dumbing it down to those in the know, but it’s an invitation and explanation for those who have not been around this sport before, was really the most difficult thing of it all, and I think we did a pretty damn good job.”
With seven-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton acting as a producer on the film, plenty of moviegoers can expect an added level of authenticity when they venture out to watch in the cinema.
